We're still young

"My name is Thein Soe, but I am known artistically by my moniker, Tharchaw. I was born in 1996 in Hseng Hlyan Village, Mong Hsu (Southern Shan State). My dedicated journey into painting started in 2018. At the time, some of my colleagues were pursuing a Diploma in Painting at the University of Arts and Culture, so I began by photocopying their curriculum materials and learning through them. I supplemented this by teaching myself through YouTube and practicing relentlessly during my free time. After being detained during the 2021 coup, I began working with watercolors in July 2021. I then had the privilege of studying under the master artist Win Pe Myint, who taught me how to feel and utilize colors deeply, leading me to specialize in oil painting. In 2022, I successfully held my first solo exhibition, “Building The Name.” Since then, I have been participating in group exhibitions, continuously learning and sharpening my skills while taking the time to prepare for my second solo show. Alongside my paintings, I am a graduate of the Yangon Film School and a documentary filmmaker. I have directed two documentary films, one animated short, and two fiction films, and I also work professionally as a sound designer& field recordist. Ultimately, my artistic language is about reaching the heart through the harmony of sight and sound."
